hevrat Chessed, coordinated by Rebbetzin Adina Morris and a steering committee of volunteers, is dedicated to providing support for our YIS family. Chevrat Chessed organizes the following:
Mazel Tov meals
We provide dinners, from soup to nuts, for one week including Shabbat for every YIS family with a new baby. We also assist in making preparations for a Shalom Zachar if needed and other services if requested. Please contact Linda Lefkowitz at 248-355-9237 when a baby is born.
Bikkur Cholim visitors
We provide services for the ill or homebound, including shopping, driving to appointments, babysitting, and/or referrals for home care service professionals. Please contact Julie Halpern at 248-356-7717 for more information.
Nichum Aveilim
We provide YIS families in mourning with dinners during the week of Shiva. Please call Shifra Zwick (248-355-5010) when you know of a YIS family in mourning or if you wish to contribute to Shiva meals. We also provide a Shiva kit explaining the mourning period, complete with a quick find of Halachot, resources, and suggested reading material.
Bruchim Habaim
We drop off challah, wine, and candles when a new individual or family moves into the community. We also provide each new member individual / family with a welcome packet including information on Southfield facilities and this Handbook. Please contact either Rita Schreiber (248-827-1199) or Myra Selesny (248-354-3494) if you know of someone we should welcome. We also pair new members with current members to help the individual or family acclimate to Southfield and the surrounding area. Please contact Joanne Gotlib at 248-355-4918 for new member pairing.
New Member prospects
When an individual or family is considering moving to our community, we provide information on services and opportunities available in the Southfield area. We also provide useful information for short-term visitors to the community.
Family Chessed opportunities
YIS families come together regularly to share in the Mitzva of Chessed. One Sunday each month, we go to the Fleischman Residence for Minyan, singing, dancing, and refreshments. We are always looking for new ideas for family Chessed opportunities. Please contact Ariella Nadel at 248-356-5663 for more information or programming suggestions.
